Will Smith had recently been told he would be inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame this upcoming season.

The world of football was devastated by news that ex-New Orleans Saints captain Will Smith had been shot to death on Saturday night. Smith was only 34-years old and leaves behind a wife — who was also shot — and children.

Smith’s wife is expected to survive her gunshot wound, but the loss of her husband is something that the entire NFL world is feeling this weekend.

To make matters even more heartbreaking, the Saints revealed that they had recently told Smith that he was going to be inducted into the team’s Hall of Fame this upcoming season.

The news was apparently being kept under wraps for a formal announcement next month. The tragic death of Smith changed those plans, but it won’t alter the enshrinement.

If anything, Smith’s untimely death is going to make the ceremony even more powerful than it already was going to be. What was supposed to be a simple honoring of a Saints legend has become a moment where fans will gather to laugh, cry and remember a man who was so much more than a football player in New Orleans.

Smith’s Hall of Fame enshrinement date has not yet been set, but you can imagine that regardless of the opponent or day of the game, it’s going to be a packed house.
