Maryland’s Melo Trimble to enter the NBA Draft

Melo Trimble will attend the NBA Draft Combine with the option to return to Maryland.

Maryland point guard Melo Trimble will enter the NBA Draft this year according to CBS Sports. He will attend the combine without an agent, but can choose to come back to Maryland for another year.

Trimble was a highly touted recruit coming out of high school. He earned four stars across the board, and received tremendous praise from Steph Curry who said Trimble reminds him of himself in college. He has displayed tremendous ability in his two years of college, with a field goal percentage of 40%, although his 3-point percentage dipped from 41% to 31%.

Despite that, he’s still a raw talent and isn’t likely to get picked in the first round. Couple that with the fact that the Terrapins are coming off of a disappointing season given how loaded their roster was and how high expectations were at the start of the season. Many expected Maryland to win the Big Ten and make a deep tournament run, and they did neither of those things.

Another year of school may be beneficial for Trimble, especially considering how successful seniors were this year. Both Buddy Hield and Denzel Valentine could’ve declared for the draft before the season started, but decided to stay and in the process saw their draft stock rise considerably. Maryland will want him back since they would be hurting at point guard if he leaves. But if he does decide to leave for the draft, he could potentially join Diamond Stone, Jake Layman, and Robert Carter Jr. in the player exodus.
