Texas A&M names Trevor Knight starting quarterback for 2016 opener

The Texas A&M Aggies will have transfer quarterback Trevor Knight as their starter for the 2016 opener against UCLA.

In the world of current college football, the graduate transfer has become a prized free agent recruit in the eyes of coaches and schools. Just last season, Florida State landed Everett Golson after his transfer from Notre Dame and named him the starter shortly after the start of fall practice.

The Texas A&M Aggies aren’t wasting that much time and have already decided who their starting quarterback will be for the 2016 opener against UCLA. Head coach Kevin Sumlin announced it will be a quarterback who spent last season playing for a former conference for of the Aggies:

Knight came to the Aggies and returned to his native Texas after spending the last four years playing quarterback for the Oklahoma Sooners. Knight will forever be remembered for leading the Sooners to a Sugar Bowl victory after the 2013 season over the two time defending champion (and heavily favored) Alabama Crimson Tide.

During last week’s spring game for Texas A&M, Knight threw for a touchdown and ran for another while also being intercepted once. He will have an uphill battle in the opener, as the Aggies welcome UCLA in another solid Power Five inter-confernce battle during the opening week of the season.

Texas A&M was in deep quarterback trouble following the end of last season as two quarterbacks, including starter Kyler Murray, announced they would be transferring. Ironically, Murray ended up at Oklahoma, where he will have to sit out the 2016 season.
