5. Will Shields

Back in the late ’90s, early 00s, the Chiefs had one of the best offensive lines in football history. The line was often understated in its dominance, but the numbers the running backs posted told the true story. There is a reason that when Priest Holmes went down with a season-ending injury in 2005, Larry Johnson, although a talented running back in his own right, was able to rush with such effectiveness.

It was a scarily good line, and at the heart of it was guard Will Shields. Shields is nothing short of one of the best offensive guards to ever play the game. As the 20th century became the 21st, Shields was voted to 12 consecutive pro bowl, never missed a game throughout his 14-year career with the Chiefs and only missed one start, that being his very first game in the NFL as a rookie. All of this came from a 3rd round pick in the 1993 NFL draft. Wow!

Shields was ultimately a complete guard. Shields is the quintessential Chief. Hard working, committed and loyal. It is not only his on-field success that makes Shield one of the five best draft picks of all time. It is his off-field character, the epitome of what a Chief should be. Shields is a Chiefs hero, and he deserves to be recognized as such on this list.
