NBA Rumors: Mark Jackson denies interest in New York Knicks job
By John Buhler
Mark Jackson has denied that the New York Knicks have contacted him about the head coaching job that will supposedly need filling in the offseason.
While Kurt Rambis twists in the wind, the rumors continue to swirl about the New York Knicks and their head coaching position.
According to Frank Isola of the New York Daily News, retired NBA point guard and former head coach of the Golden State Warriors Mark Jackson has not been contacted by the New York Knicks for their upcoming vacancy at the head coaching position.
While it seems team president Phil Jackson would prefer to keep Rambis in place, Jackson was one of the handful of names rumored to interest the Knicks should owner James Dolan want to go in a different direction.
Jackson played 17 NBA seasons on seven different teams including two stints with the Knicks (1987-92, 2001-02). The former great assist man most notably with the Knicks and Indiana Pacers would coach the Warriors from 2011 to 2014 before being fired in favor of Steve Kerr two summers ago.
Since leaving the Bay Area, Jackson has put together a strong television analyst role with ESPN as a color commentator during NBA games. He may want to get back into coaching as he was responsible for the beginning of the massive turnaround in Golden State.
However, it seems his former employer has not actually reached out to him about being their next head coach in 2016-17. Should Jackson be considered for the job if it becomes available? Yes, but will he? That’s up to Dolan and Phil Jackson to decide. Until then, Jackson will continue to do fantastic television work for ESPN.
