NHL Playoffs 2016: Sharks confirm Martin Jones will start Game One
The San Jose Sharks will go with Martin Jones in net for Game One on Thursday in their series against the Los Angeles Kings.
Ever since the San Jose Sharks acquired goaltender James Reimer from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Reimer has formed an impressive goaltending tandem with starter Martin Jones.
In recent weeks, Reimer has outperformed Jones, leading to questions about who would be the starting goaltender come playoff time.
Sharks head coach Peter DeBoer confirmed that Jones will be the starter in game one in their series against the Los Angeles Kings.
Jones has had success this season against his former team, going 3-1-1 against them with a GAA of 2.57 and a .913 save percentage.
Reimer has played just one game against them this season, getting the win with a .951 save percentage in that game while allowing two goals.
Jones is the more experienced of the two against the Kings, so it’s a wise decision to go with Jones. They can always turn to Reimer should they need to. Reimer was acquired to be the backup to Jones and that hasn’t changed.
Jones played for the Kings from 2014 to 2015 before being traded to the Boston Bruins in the Milan Lucic trade. The Bruins traded Jones to the Sharks in exchange for a first round pick four days after the Bruins acquired him.
He served as the backup to Jonathan Quick before being traded by the Kings. In his first season in San Jose, also his first season as a starting goalie, Jones had a 37-23-4 record with a .918 save percentage.
