New York Giants: 5 best draft picks of all-time
By Randy Gurzi
Going back to the 1979 draft, it would be laughable to think quarterback Phil Simms would be considered one of the better players in Giants history. The small-school kid from Morehead State was a relative unknown, and was booed loudly by the New York crowd when the Giants took him with the seventh overall selection.
It’s easy to see why as his career in the Kentucky school was less than impressive. He finished his time there with a horrible completion percentage of just 48.9 percent and had more interceptions (45) than touchdowns (32).
However, the Giants saw something in him they liked and he quickly turned the fans’ opinion of him around. Simms won his first five NFL starts and the team went 6-4 with him under center during his rookie season. He was the runner-up for Rookie of the Year as well.
He played his entire 14-year career as a Giant and threw for 33,462 yards with 199 touchdowns and 157 interceptions. He was the MVP of Super Bowl XXI and found himself on two Pro Bowl rosters as well.
The No. 11 jersey is now retired for New York and Simms is one of the more successful color analysts that covers NFL games. Not too bad for the formerly unknown kid from Louisville, Kentucky.
