The Dallas Cowboys are showing a serious interest in Cal quarterback Jared Goff.
The NFL Draft is just weeks away, and already there has been a massive shakeup at the top of the order. The Rams acquiring the top pick from the Titans changes things slightly in a way that might allow the Dallas Cowboys to cash in on an unexpected turn of events.
While Tony Romo is the quarterback of the foreseeable future, he’s not going to last forever. It’s not unfathomable to believe that the Cowboys will want to move on by the tie 2020 rolls around, and having a a quarterback already perfectly groomed for the role by then is ideal.
That quarterback might be Jared Goff.
According to ESPN.com’s Todd Archer, the Cowboys are holding a private workout with Goff that will be attended by owner Jerry Jones.
"Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones will be making a road trip to Berkeley, California, this weekend for a private workout with Cal quarterback Jared Goff."
That’s not an indication that Goff is the sole target at No. 4, but it’s clear that Dallas is up to something here. Obviously, grabbing a talent like Goff to have on the bench and learn from Tony Romo is ideal, but is spending your top draft pick on a guy that won’t play for at least 2-3 more years worth it?
Let us not count out the possibility of the Cowboys showing such serious interest in Goff for trade reasons. It’s clear that the Rams will be taking a quarterback with the No. 1 pick, and the Browns are expected to take one as well with the next pick it’s Cleveland so lord knows they’re going to mess it up. If Goff slides to No. 4, then the Cowboys are in a prime position to trade with a team like Philadelphia or San Francisco.
That’s assuming the Jaguars don’t do this if Goff slides to No. 3.
It’s hard to count out the idea of Dallas using the pic on Goff, though. They’ve already shown an interest in both Conor Cook and Paxton Lynch with rumors about Dak Prescott hanging around as well. This might be the year Dallas selects Romo’s eventual replacement, but will it really be at No. 4 and could Goff be that guy?
