Red Sox slugger David Ortiz stole a base against the Blue Jays despite being the least likely candidate to do so
David Ortiz is retiring after this season, finishing up a triumphant and grand career most famously spent with the Boston Red Sox. His power-hitting has become the stuff of legends in Boston and among Red Sox nation over the years, especially with his heroics in the postseason and his part in finally breaking the dreaded “curse” back in 2004. What Big Papi has never been known for, as a hefty man, is his speed. Someone forgot to tell him that on Friday night against the Toronto Blue Jays.
In the bottom of the 7th inning with the Red Sox ahead 5-3, Brock Holt was at the plate with David Ortiz on first. Obviously no one expected Papi to take off, so he took advantage of that and got a huge jump towards second base on a pitch and stole second without a throw or even a cover ever being made:
Though we can’t see the pitch cross the plate there, it sounds like by the announcers’ call of when the ball gets to the catcher that David Ortiz might’ve been safe had there been a cover or throw. You can go ahead and mark this one down as the most unlikely stolen base that you’ll see at the start of the 2016 MLB season.
Wouldn’t it be crazy, though, if David Ortiz somehow added stealing bases to his arsenal at his advanced age and in his final season? If this is what him stealing bags looks like, let’s pray that’s the case.
