When will the NBA start wearing advertisement patches on their jerseys?

NBA owners recently voted to allow the usage of advertisement patches on players’ uniforms. While players’ uniforms will have the advertisement patches, the jerseys sold in retail and that fans purchase will not have the advertisement patches. This will allow the league to make money off sponsors while still keeping their fan base relatively happy.

Advertisements on jerseys will start at the beginning of the 2017-2018 season. Ads on jerseys was inevitable, especially with all the money involved in North American professional sports. The leagues have likely seen the success that European sports leagues have had using the same policy and realized how great of an idea it is. Advertisement patches on jerseys will only be 2.5 inches by 2.5 inches. That is enough for the logos to get noticed without taking away from the rest of the uniform.

The NBA has once again proven to be the most forward thinking and bold of the major sports leagues. They are constantly trying new things and adapting. That’s something that should show an immediate jump in their profits once the advertisements begin. Don’t be surprised to see the NHL, NFL, and MLB follow suit with advertisements on uniforms once they see what it does for basketball.
