HOUSTON – OCTOBER 17: Defensive tackle Amobi Akoye /

Amobi Okoye (2007: first round, 10th overall)

Amobi Okoye’s journey to the NFL was such an incredible story that it was almost impossible not to root for the 6-foot-2, 302-pound defensive tackle.

Okoye moved to the United States from Nigeria when he was 12 years old, and did not begin playing football until his sophomore year of high school. At age 16, he became the youngest player in NCAA history when he enrolled at the University of Louisville. As a testament to Okoye’s intelligence and character, he had the opportunity to attend Harvard University before electing to pursue a career in football.

Following a senior season in which he earned second team All-American and first team All-Big East honors, Okoye was drafted by the Houston Texans with the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft. At age 19, this selection made him the youngest draft pick in league history.

Okoye’s rookie season with the Texans got off to a promising start, as he recorded 23 tackles, 5.5 sacks and one forced fumble. Unfortunately, this would be the high point of his career. Okoye recorded only 5.5 sacks over the course of the next three seasons, and was released after four years in Houston.

Pro Bowlers Marshawn Lynch, Darrelle Revis and Patrick Willis are just a few of the players that the Texans passed on by drafting Okoye 10th overall.
