Scott Brooks is ready to jump into that Lakers job should the team fire Byron Scott
As the NBA season begins to come to a close here with the start of the playoffs, a lot of focus is now turning to head coaching vacancies that need to be filled, as well as some that aren’t vacant as of yet, but might be in the near future. Well, former Oklahoma City Thunder head coach Scott Brooks, one of the hottest names on the market at the moment, is interested in one of the latter.
According to a report from Basketball Insiders, should the Los Angeles Lakers sit down and ultimately decide that they want to end the Byron Scott era, then Brooks would be more than happy to jump into the role as head coach of one of the more polarizing organizations in all of the NBA.
Of course, this is significant for a variety of reasons.
Most notably, the Lakers might want to make this move if they can land the most coveted free agent on the market this summer, Kevin Durant. When in Oklahoma City together, Brooks and Durant had a very good relationship, so should the former Thunder head coach head to Los Angeles, then their chances of landing Durant as their next big superstar might go up drastically.
Then, you can even look ahead to next year as well and another current Oklahoma City star that will be free, Russell Westbrook. If Brooks becomes the Lakers new head man, then there’s also the slight chance that he can lure Russ to come out there as well. And if they are indeed able to land Durant, then you can have a year of both Durant and Brooks courting Westbrook to come home and help bring the bottom-dweller Lakers back to prominence.
There are a few teams out there now, such as the Washington Wizards, who are looking for the services of Brooks. However, when you sit down and think about it, Brooks heading to the Lakers opens up much more intriguing possibilities.
