Could the next New York Knicks head coach be Luke Walton?
The Brooklyn Nets found their head coach earlier today in hiring current Atlanta Hawks and former New York Knicks assistant coach Kenny Atkinson. The New York Knicks, meanwhile, are just getting started in their head coaching search.
Knicks czar Phil Jackson is concentrating his search for a head coach on people that he knows, in order to continue running the triangle system that he ran as a coach which was perfected by Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant.
One of the hottest head coaching candidates is Golden State Warriors assistant Luke Walton. Walton coached the Warriors during the regular season while Steve Kerr was recovering from back surgery and led the team to a 39-4 record during that time frame.
Walton played with the Lakers while Jackson was head coach, and according to the NY Post’s Mark Berman, met with the Knicks about their head coaching position. The Warriors are letting Walton interview for head coaching positions as long as it doesn’t interfere with their chase to repeat as NBA Finals champions.
Since Jackson is so steadfast in sticking with the triangle, Walton is the ideal candidate for the position. He can combine his pre-existing knowledge of the triangle along with some of the principles that Kerr runs with the Warriors.
Kurt Rambis and Brian Shaw are not the answer. If it’s anyone to run the triangle it should be Luke Walton.
