West Ham’s two late goals against Leicester City may have blown the Premier League title race wide open.
After Leicester City reeled off five straight clean sheets, it was always going to be hard to maintain that against West Ham United, who have been another great surprise this season. Jamie Vardy getting sent off only complicated things further. Leicester have shown great defensive ability, winning four of their last five wins by a 1-0 score, but the red card, as well as carrying a lead for this long, was enough for Leicester to crumble under pressure.
The referee made a big call to send off Vardy for diving rather than award him a penalty. And while that was bad enough, he went back and called a penalty on Andy Carroll on what looked like a questionable call.
To make matters worse for them, Aaron Cresswell scored a wonder goal that would’ve been enough to win it for West Ham.
A last-gasp penalty for Leicester was enough to rescue a point, but the result was still enough for the fans to boo the ref after the whistle. It was also enough to end a five-game win streak, and a win today would’ve surely ended the title race. Instead, Tottenham trail by just eight points instead of 10 and have an opportunity to close the gap to five by the end of the week. A huge result that could very well be the game of the season.
