5 reasons Washington Wizards should hire Scott Brooks
By John Buhler
4. Will let his players play
This doesn’t seem like a huge reason to hire a coach, but Brooks will use great observation from letting his players play to make appropriate adjustments from game-to-game. In short, Brooks isn’t going to micromanage his players with a staunch commitment to a coaching philosophy. Instead he’ll look at the group of players he has on his roster and will find a way to get the most out of his players, or at least have them playing competitively.
Part of why Washington failed to make the NBA Playoffs in 2015-16 was the front office’s demand to play small ball, something general manager Ernie Grunfeld and former head coach Randy Wittman didn’t do until this past summer. The Wizards struggled at the forward positions and dug themselves too deep of a hole early on to claw out of in the final months of the regular season.
This laissez-faire coaching tactic doesn’t necessarily mean that Brooks is a passive head coach. It just means that he is willing to try new things and be experimental to ensure that his team finds the right rotations and strategies to run with.
It’s crucial for the currently troubled Wizards to play out their frustrations. Brooks will pick up on a few things from seeing how his team plays and should have them playing better basketball by mid-season without question. His temperament is key to Washington being able to bounce back in 2016-17.
