2. It frees them up on draft day

Sure reports are indicating that team owner and general manager Jerry Jones loved the recent workout he witnessed with Cal quarterback Jared Goff, but there still is a lot of doubt in Big D that Jones wants to draft a quarterback with the fourth overall pick in the upcoming draft. Instead, Jones would probably prefer to stock up for one last run with his guy, Tony Romo under center.

Brining in a decent vet like Brian Hoyer frees things up for Dallas on draft day. They won’t feel the weight of having just Romo and Moore on the roster as they sit there with the fourth pick, but rather they can truly stick to their board and select whoever they feel has the highest grade.

Many people believe that would be Florida State defensive back Jalen Ramsey, or possibly even UCLA linebacker Myles Jack. Who knows, having Hoyer could make the team feel even better about possibly trading down and gathering more picks to stockpile for a run.

The possibility of moving down has become even more likely now that the first overall pick has been traded. The belief is that the Los Angeles Rams moved up to get North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz. This move makes it likely that Ole Miss tackle Laremy Tunsil, the former consensus first pick, falls to the fourth spot.

A team in desperate need of a franchise tackle may be willing to give Dallas another premium pick to move up and take Tunsil. When Dallas needs to replace Romo, they could try and make a drastic move like the one the Rams just made. Until then, Hoyer could be the guy to ease their minds should Romo suffer a rough injury again.
