Upcoming free agent Mike Conley is reportedly expected to leave the Memphis Grizzlies.
One of the most important cogs to the Memphis Grizzlies playoff run has been the impressive play of point guard Mike Conley. He averaged 15.8 points per game and 5.8 assists per game this season while playing solid defense for Memphis. However, Conley will also likely be the best point guard on the free agent market.
He is keeping his options open, which could lead to a departure from the Grizzlies. With Conley getting older, he might want to sign with a team that is designed more efficiently for immediate success than the Grizzlies.
From CBS Sports:
"[Grizzlies head coach] Dave Joerger is in a tough spot in Memphis with an aging roster that broke down this season and is on its way to being further depleted with the expected free-agent departure of point guard Mike Conley."
Even if Memphis offers Conley a max contract, he will most likely get several max offers in free agency because of the rising salary cap and because he’s the strongest point guard in a weak free agent market for point guards. The Grizzlies certainly aren’t doing themselves any favors by looking weak against the San Antonio Spurs.
Conley could attract interest from contenders such as the Atlanta Hawks or the Houston Rockets. While the Bucks would have to sell Conley on their future, it’s hard to imagine that Conley wouldn’t at least consider playing for a team that is on the rise. The New York Knicks, desperately needing a point guard, will likely offer him a max contract.
It appears that Conley’s time in Memphis could be done.
