NFL Rumors: Denver Broncos re-sign Ronnie Hillman

The Denver Broncos have reportedly agreed to terms with running back Ronnie Hillman by bringing him back to Denver on a one-year contract extension.

According to Mike Klis of 9NEWS, the Denver Broncos have agreed to a one-year contract extension with running back Ronnie Hillman.

This is great news for the Broncos who will keep their popular running back who spent his first four NFL seasons in Denver playing for the Broncos. Hillman has been an important part of the Broncos offense both years they made it to the Super Bowl, back in 2013 and winning it all in 2015.

In 2015, Hillman split much of the workload in new head coach Gary Kubiak’s ultra-conservative offense with fellow tailback C.J. Anderson. Hillman had his best season as a Broncos running back in 2015, as he achieved career-highs in games (16), starts (11), rushing attempts (207), rushing yards (863), and rushing touchdowns with seven.

Hillman is a capable receiving back, as he had 24 catches for 111 receiving yards. In his best NFL season to date, Hillman nearly achieved 1,000 all-purpose yards as a prominent Broncos tailback with 974.

Given that the Broncos have uncertainty at the quarterback position about if Mark Sanchez is really the long-term replacement under center for the retired Peyton Manning and the departed Brock Osweiler, it would seem very likely that Kubiak will again try to pound the rock with his two veteran tailbacks in Anderson and Hillman in 2016.

Kubiak has the luxury of being able to rely on what will probably be another terrific Wade Phillips defense, though Super Bowl 50 MVP outside linebacker Von Miller does intend to hold out for a long-term deal.

While general manager John Elway did let many of his Super Bowl Champion players walk, including defensive lineman Malik Jackson, inside linebacker Danny Trevathan, and Osweiler to Houston, bringing back Hillman is a smart move for the Broncos heading into their 2016 offseason program.
