NFL Rumors: Jets not expected to sign Ryan Fitzpatrick before draft

The Jets and Ryan Fitzpatrick are reportedly not expected to reach an agreement before the NFL Draft.

The New York Jets found a quick solution for the sudden retirement of D’Brickashaw Ferguson by trading for Denver Broncos left tackle Ryan Clady. As of right now, nobody knows whose blindside Clady will be protecting next season. With the NFL Draft coming up, the Jets and free agent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick are not expected to reach an agreement before the draft.

This could complicate things for the Jets in the draft. Do they go after a quarterback in the first round? They will likely have to trade up to get one as they have the 20th overall pick in the draft. It won’t be easy for them to do so since they only have six draft picks this year. They could take a shot at Paxton Lynch from the Memphis Tigers, but he is more of a project than an immediate starter. The presence or lack thereof of Fitzpatrick would likely not change anything if the Jets like Lynch.

New York has to make a decision on Ryan Fitzpatrick soon. If they can’t sign him, they have to move on to Plan B. Perhaps Geno Smith would have success in a more efficient offense than he has dealt with in the past. An improved offensive line could help him as well. The Jets are wise to not overpay Fitzpatrick. While he is a very serviceable starter and he is familiar with the Jets offense, he is not the type of quarterback worth overpaying for.
