NHL Playoffs, Capitals vs. Flyers Game 3: Full highlights, final score and more
The Washington Capitals defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 6-1 in Game 3 of their first round series.
The Philadelphia Flyers came into Game 3 needing a win at the Wells Fargo Center to get back in their first round series against the Washington Capitals. They came out storming as forward Michael Raffl scored in the first minute to grab a quick 1-0 lead. From that point on, it was all Caps as they scored the next four goals. Washington would get goals from Marcus Johansson, Evgenzy Kuznetsov, Jay Beagle, and John Carlson, as well as two goals from Alex Ovechkin.
Philadelphia was undone by their inability to stay out of the penalty box and inability to capitalize on power plays. Steve Mason had another very rough night, allowing a weak goals to Ovechkin and Carlson. Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds had a rough night with four penalty minutes.
Washington goaltender Braden Holtby had another outstanding night in goal. He saved 31 of the 32 shots on goal that he saw and he kept the Caps within reach until the Caps put the game out of reach with their four goals. Capitals defenseman Brooks Orpik had to leave the game after a hit by Ryan White. He is suspected to have a concussion.
Three stars
1) Ovechkin had two goals (including the game winning goal) as well as an assist on Carlson’s goal. He had five shots on goal and was a physical presence as well. The Caps captain seems very motivated to carry his team to their first Stanley Cup. If he keeps playing like this, that’s a very realistic possibility.
2) Holtby came up huge for the Capitals after allowing an early goal to Raffl. With 31 saves on 32 shots on goal, Holtby carried his team while they struggled. He’s got to be an early favorite for the Conn Smythe.
3) Carlson had a goal and two assists. He now has a goal in each game in the series and is another Conn Smythe Trophy candidate on the President’s Trophy winners.
