Steven Adams thought his buzzer-beater had led the Thunder over the Mavericks, but the refs waved it off

Kevin Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder played one of their worst games in quite some time on Monday night in Game 2 of their first round series in the 2016 NBA Playoffs against the Dallas Mavericks. Subsequently, the Mavericks were in control late in the fourth quarter after having been thrashed in Game 1 and trailing in the series early on. However, Durant and Steven Adams almost spoiled the upset for the Mavs.

Down four points with only 14 seconds left on the clock, Durant knocked down a three. Dallas then drew a foul and Raymond Felton couldn’t knock down the free ones, thus giving OKC another chance. Though the initial shot attempts were missed, Thunder center Steven Adams picked up the rebound and had a great look at a putback as time expired. It went in and Chesapeake Energy Arena lost their mind at what they thought was the game-winner:

However, Adams’ putback at the buzzer was obviously close and the refs had to go to the monitor to check it out. Upon review, they made the right call and determined that Steven Adams was just a hair too late getting the ball out of his hands. They waved the shot off and thus gave the Mavericks the victory:

That’s so close, but the series is now tied at 1-1 and the Mavericks have to be believing that, if they can force OKC into another ugly performance like this one, they might have a chance at an upset in the series.
