Kyle Schwarber expected to make full recovery after successful surgery

The Chicago Cubs announced Kyle Schwarber had successful knee surgery on Tuesday and the slugger is expected to make a full recovery.

Kyle Schwarber had surgery to repair his ACL and LCL in his left knee on Tuesday and the Cubs expect the slugging outfielder/catcher to make a full recovery.

The surgery was performed by Dallas Cowboys orthopedic specialist Dr. Daniel Cooper who was sought by the Cubs to perform the surgery because of his experience dealing with multiple ligament tears.

According to Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer, nothing unexpected happened during the operation and it went as well as they could have hoped.

“There’s no indications he won’t recover fully and be the player we expect,” Hoyer said, via mlb.com. “He knows what’s ahead. He was in good spirits before [the procedure]. He had gotten over the initial shock. He’ll dominate this rehab and work incredibly hard. That’s what we miss the most — we miss the bat but he’s such a personality. He’s such a competitor and a winner. He’ll go about the rehab the same way.”

Schwarber is expected to return to Chicago from Dallas where the surgery took place to begin his lengthy rehab process.

The best-case scenario for the Cubs and Schwarber would have him ready for full participation when pitchers and catchers report to spring training next February.

Cubs president Theo Epstein said following the injury diagnosis that ruled the former first round pick out for the season that it was too early to determine if Schwarber would continue to work as a catcher. A determination on that likely won’t be made until Schwarber is back in action to see how the knee responds.
