Both the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys reportedly have interest in quarterback Brian Hoyer.

Have arm, will travel. That’s not the catchphrase of the Paladin but of quarterback Brian Hoyer, cut loose recently by the Houston Texans but probably not without a job for long in the QB-needy NFL. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports that Hoyer is visiting the New York Jets today, weather permitting:

And there are reports out of Dallas that the Cowboys might have interest in Hoyer as well, seeing him as a better alternative than the ghastly crew of signal-callers who rotated through the lineup in 2015 while Tony Romo was injured. Hard to argue with that assessment.

Still, the Jets situation is more interesting simply because it’s unclear whether they even have a starting QB at this point. With the team mired in an impasse with incumbent Ryan Fitzpatrick, it’s time for the Jets to consider their options, and Hoyer rates as a legit if unexciting one.

Though he started only nine games last season, Hoyer put up some nice numbers, completing more than 60 percent of his passes and firing 19 touchdown passes against only seven interceptions. At age 30, he should still be in his prime, whatever that might be.

On the Jets, he’d also have the luxury of working with two top flight wide receivers in Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker, something you couldn’t say of his time in Cleveland or Houston (sorry everyone not named DeAndre Hopkins). It’s actually not completely insane to suggest he might be able to completely replace Fitzpatrick’s production, though he’s much less experienced as a starter.

The only certainty is that the NFL QB carousel is going to continue to spin. Hoyer wouldn’t be the sexiest acquisition for whatever team lands him, but he’s at least proven he can lead an offense without killing it, and that’s more than some of the other options still out there can say.
