Amid heavy speculation from Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain have reportedly approached Jose Mourinho to be their new manager.
Ever since he got sacked by Chelsea, the writing appeared to be on the wall that Jose Mourinho would be managing Manchester United next. He had talked about it endlessly, and the speculation never seemed to end. It’s clear that he only wants to manage big clubs, and in the midst of all that, Paris Saint-Germain have now joined the mix, according to Sky Sports.
This season was particularly frustrating for Paris Saint-Germain, because they flat out dominated the domestic side of things, practically winning the league wire to wire with over two months to go in the season. They were in the conversation as one of the three most dominant teams in the world, and Champions League success was expected from them.
However, that is one hurdle PSG have yet to clear as they fell in the quarterfinals again to Manchester City. It’s not like they’re Champions League veterans themselves — this year’s semifinal appearance is City’s first in team history.
All of this makes it seem likely that bench boss Laurent Blanc will be relieved of his duties. Couple that with the fact that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is practically guaranteed to leave and PSG have a lot of soul searching to do heading into next season.
However, if there’s one manager who can help keep PSG’s status as one of Europe’s elite, it’s Jose Mourinho. He has won countless awards, including two Champions League trophies, and he would be able to attract high-profile transfer targets. His forgettable end at Chelsea should not dissuade them from eventually hiring him, as the players are more to blame for their wretched tailspin this year. The fact that he even won the league with that band of misfits to begin with really speaks to his quality as a manager.
If Manchester United are serious about getting Jose Mourinho, they’d better act quickly. It’s hard to imagine that they would be able to persuade him ahead of PSG, since they’re in a better situation and can offer him more money. Whatever team he lands with, though, there will be no shortage of entertainment.
