MLB teams won’t be testing the arm of New York Yankees outfielder Aaron Hicks any longer after the laser he uncorked on Wednesday night.
Much was made in the offseason about the New York Yankees trading for former Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman and his 100-plus mph heater. Turns out he may not even be the hardest thrower on his own team.
Even further, it’s a position player who showed off some serious mph against the Oakland Athletics during Wednesday night’s game. With the A’s leading 3-1 in the fourth inning, they looked to add to their lead with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Big mistake. HUGE! Because that’s where Aaron Hicks was camped out and unleashed a throw to home plate to nab the runner and make MLB history in the process. Hicks’ throw to home was clocked at a mind-boggling 105.5 mph and is the fastest recorded throw from an outfielder in Statcast history.
.@AaronHicks31's 105.5-mph laser is the fastest outfield throw EVER tracked by #Statcast. https://t.co/bqv2QdUqgJhttps://t.co/A7GYn2vghO

Next time there’s a ball hit in the vicinity of Hicks and a third base coach is thinking about sending the runner, that coach should be fired because Hicks is likely to have flames coming from the ball and a trail of smoke left in its wake.
I am curious how fast Chapman could throw from the outfield. And I wonder what the mph would have been on some of the throws from Vladimir Guerrero, Yoenis Cespedes, Andre Dawson, Raul Mondesi and Roberto Clemente. Those corner outfielders had some of the biggest arms you’ll ever see, but I don’t know if they could top what Hicks did tonight.
