NFL Draft: Eagles discussed trade with Chargers before making deal with Browns
By Jason Parker
Before acquiring the second overall pick in the NFL Draft from Cleveland, the Philadelphia Eagles had sought a trade with San Diego for the third pick.
For the second time in the last week, a major blockbuster trade has seen a team move up the draft board in next Thursday’s first round. This time, it’s the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Eagles made a trade with the Cleveland Browns on Wednesday in which the Browns and Eagles swapped first round picks (with the Eagles now picking second and the Browns moving down the eight) and a boatload of picks in different rounds for this year’s draft as well as the ones in 2017 and 2018.
As it turns out, the Eagles (who moved up to eight from 13th after an early trade with the Miami Dolphins) had been shopping to move up long before this deal and were in the works on a trade with the San Diego Chargers, who hold the third pick:
Many of the draft experts believe the Eagles wanted to make a trade to draft a quarterback as high as they could. The Los Angeles Rams, who hold the top overall pick after a trade with the Tennessee Titans last week, are also in the market for a quarterback and will choose between Carson Wentz and Jared Goff.
If the Eagles do indeed go with a quarterback at No. 2, questions remain about what will happen with one or both of the qrterbacks on their current roster, Sam Bradford (who they acquired in a trade with the Rams last year) and Chase Daniel.
