Jake Arrieta throws no-hitter vs Reds
Cubs pitcher Jake Arrieta has thrown a no-hitter vs the Cincinnati Reds.
Jake Arrieta was once seen as a bust of a prospect after washing out with the Baltimore Orioles. He then got traded to the Chicago Cubs in 2013 and flourished immediately. He pitched a spectacular 2015 season, winning the National League Cy Young award in the process.
What Arrieta also accomplished was throwing a no-hitter. It’s difficult to pull this off once, but on Thursday night, the 30-year-old did this again against the Cincinnati Reds. He allowed four walks and struck out six in this game.
Did Arrieta need to stay in for the entire game? Probably not. The Cubs absolutely obliterated the lowly Reds 16-0, including a grand slam from Kris Bryant. However, no-hitters are an exception and if your top pitcher is on a role like the 2007 draft pick was, you leave him in. That decision obviously paid off with the no-hitter being successfully completed.
This game will add to Arrieta’s already-growing resume to become the National League Cy Young award winner for a second straight year. He’s showing that last season was no fluke and could equal his 1.77 ERA and 22 wins if things stay like this.
Jake Arrieta is one of the many reasons why the Cubs are fun to watch. They have plenty of top young talent that will be around for a while that will keep them in the hunt for the World Series for years to come.
