Islanders fans threw drinks on Denis Potvin, a team legend who is now a broadcaster for the Florida Panthers, during their playoff series.

When you look at the history of the New York Islanders, there may be no better player for the franchise than Denis Potvin. A former captain for the franchise during their run of four straight Stanley Cup titles in the early 1980’s, Potvin was one of the best defensemen of that era and was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

These days, Potvin gets his paychecks from a different NHL team as he is a analyst for the Florida Panthers. As the two teams are facing off in the first round of the 2016 Stanley Cup Playoffs, it gives Islanders fans a chance to see their living legend at least two more times this season.

Apparnetly, knowledge of Potvin’s legacy with the Islanders didn’t get transfered when the team moved from Long Island to Brooklyn this season. Following the Panthers’ Game Four win Wednesday, Potvin and play-by-play man Steve Goldstein (also a Brooklyn native who previously worked for WFAN) described having beverages poured on them by Islanders fans:

It is hard to understand how fans of a team would go out of their way to throw beer and other items on one of the best, if not THE best, players to ever play for that franchise. If those Islanders fans didn’t know who Denis Potvin was, that’s sad…if they did and still did it, that’s even sadder.

Game Five of the series is Friday night back in Florida and, with the series tied at two games each, will return to the Barclays Center for Game Six on Sunday.
