Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo was placed on the disabled list after his start on Friday. There is no timetable for his return.

The Orioles were very busy in the offseason. They re-signed Chris Davis and Darren O’Day and brought in former Texas Rangers starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo. In order to compete in the American League East, management needed to spend some money. Unfortunately, we will need to wait a bit to see Gallardo’s on the mound again. He left his Friday start early and was promptly placed on the 15-day DL with right shoulder/bicep tendinitis.

Yovani Gallardo left Friday’s start after two innings because of shoulder discomfort. He said he actually felt it while warming up in the bullpen before the game. “My shoulder just didn’t feel right. To be honest, it was one of those feelings that I’ve never had my whole career,” Gallardo stated.

Luckily for Baltimore, the team has a couple of pitchers returning from the injured list. On the same day, the team reactivated left-hander Brian Matusz, Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com tweeted. The team will also be getting Kevin Gausman back and will make his first start on Monday.

In four starts this season, including Friday, Gallardo was 1-1 with a 7.00 ERA, 1.667 WHIP and 4.5 K/9. His velocity has been on the decline for years and his current ground ball rate is at a career-worst 37.9 percent. Hopefully this time off can reset Gallardo and he can get back to his 2015 self.

Yovani Gallardo was only owned in 22.2 percent of ESPN leagues before the news broke, so this injury doesn’t affect a lot of fantasy owners. If, for some reason, you are one of them, you didn’t lose a lot. There are still plenty of good pitchers on the waiver wire you can easily pick up.

Mat Latos and J.A. Happ are two pitchers that come to mind that are widely available. They’ve both performed great to start the season and should continue throughout the year.
