GGG doesn’t really call out other boxers, but he did say he’s ready for the big fight the boxing world wants to see.
Another one bites the dust. By that I mean opponents for GGG, boxing sensation Gennady Golovkin, who made short work of another foe Saturday night on HBO.
The power-punching middleweight champion put on another show, beating up undefeated but also relatively untested Dominic Wade. It took only two rounds for GGG to add Wade to his list of knockout victims, which has now grown to an eye-popping 21 opponents in a row. No one has made it the distance with Golovkin since 2008.
The problem for Golovkin, if there is one, is that people know most of his fights are mismatches. Other top middleweights don’t want to step in with him, but there is one name that could instantly create a megafight: Canelo Alvarez, the lineal middleweight champ and holder of the titles at 160 pounds that Golovkin doesn’t have.
After his destruction of Wade, HBO’s Max Kellerman asked GGG about his plans if his team can’t put together a Canelo fight. He was noncommittal, so Kellerman asked flat out if Golovkin had anything to say to Canelo, who has a big fight of his own coming up against Amir Khan next month.
His response:
"Doesn’t matter who wins, just give me my belt. I need my belt. I am ready, I’m ready guys!"
Just imagine Golovkin saying that in his charmingly halting English and you’re good to go.
That comment also seems to suggest that GGG would fight Khan if he pulls off the upset, but that would be a huge size mismatch in favor of Golovkin. Already, some boxing observers think Canelo’s camp would be hesitant to agree to take on Golovkin for the same reason.
But as the HBO anouncers suggested on Saturday, Canelo likes to take fights that please the fans, so you never know. At least we know where GGG stands on the possibility of Golovkin-Alvarez.
