Gennady Golovkin is starting himself on a path towards Canelo Alvarez, which is too big a fight to pass up.

Gennady Golovkin may not be fighting the highest quality opposition right now, but he is the hottest property in all of boxing. His second-round knockout of Dominic Wade was his 22nd finish in a row and it’s setting himself on a path to superstardom. As the holder of three of the five sanctioned middleweight belts, his goal is to unify all of the titles, which he could possibly accomplish by the end of the year.

As long as Golovkin is eyeing total control of the middleweight division, Canelo Alvarez remains the biggest hurdle he must overcome in order to achieve that goal. Canelo is considered to be the fighting pride of Mexico, and the biggest star left in boxing. His fight with Miguel Cotto attracted 900,000 pay-per-view buys and it’s not hard to think that his upcoming bout with Amir Khan could do more. There isn’t a single opponent that he won’t turn down, and every time he steps in the ring, he looks to put on a show.

No matter what the two fighters do, they are going to be fielding multiple questions about each other. Golovkin already handled that well in his post-fight interview, while the first thing Canelo will be asked to do if he beats Khan is issue a challenge to GGG.

Canelo and Golovkin are the two best middleweights on the planet, and this fight is too big to pass up. Until it is booked, their names will be linked together and, like Mayweather vs. Pacquiao, it’s a matchup that makes all the sense in the world. As long as it doesn’t take five years to negotiate, fans will remain interested in the bout and will be left with a satisfying product.

Right now, everything is falling into place, and the two are destined to clash sooner rather than later. Here are five reasons why the governing bodies should do everything in their power to make this fight happen.
