David Backes hit on Brent Seabrook breaks glass 26 seconds into Game 7 (Video)

Nothing like some quality destruction to start the Game 7 of the series between the St. Louis Blues and the Chicago Blackhawks.

With both teams tied in the best-of-seven series after Chicago fought its way back into the competition from being behind 3-1, it’s no surprise that Game 7 would be a little…tense. And aggressive. And dramatic. While the Blackhawks are desperate to maintain their status as champions and win a Stanley Cup for the second consecutive year, the Blues are eager to end their brutal history of NHL playoff collapse and failure.

The players were ready to attack at the sound of the puck dropping on the ice. Just 26 seconds into the game, Blues forward and captain David Backes slammed Chicago’s Brent Seabrook into the glass. While the check itself might be pretty standard as far as hockey is concerned, that hit was no ordinary hit—glass actually broke where Seabrook crashed into it:

That fan sitting behind the glass on the right definitely had a playoff game to remember. You may not see the broken glass, but you can certainly see his shocked and awed expression.

The incident between Backes and Seabrook occurred just over 30 seconds before St. Louis would score the first goal of Game 7, courtesy of Jori Lehtera. Lehtera, who had 34 points in the regular season with nine goals and 25 assists, was assisted by Jay Bouwmeester and Jaden Schwartz.

While no more glass may break in the Scottrade Center tonight, you can certainly bet on more fierce action taking place on the ice in this live or die conclusion to the heated Western Conference series. Glass won’t be the only thing broken tonight: the losing team’s playoff dreams will be crushed tonight, as they will be sent home instead of continuing on into the second round to face fellow Central Division team the Dallas Stars.
