Who should the Los Angeles Lakers target to replace Byron Scott as head coach?
The Los Angeles Lakers have gone through a coaching carousel over the years. Since Phil Jackson left after the 2010-11 season, four coaches have been in charge for at least one game. The pressure of coaching the Lakers is high, though, given the bar past Jackson and Pat Riley have set over the past three decades.
Well, this seemed to be too much for the now former Lakers coach Byron Scott. He was fired late Sunday night after two seasons with the team, compiling a miserable record of 38-126. His .227 win percentage is the worst in Lakers franchise history.
Scott’s firing comes two years after Mike D’Antonio didn’t work out as the coach and four years after Mike Brown. None of these hires have worked out like Lakers have expected, so they have to turn to yet another plan B.
Who the new coach could be will be interesting to see. While the hiring process still has to play out, there are plenty of viable options to become the head man on the bench.
The lust of working with the Lakers doesn’t seem to be there anymore, though. While the coaching hires have been somewhat splashy, they haven’t had much to work with over the past few years because free agents aren’t looking to come to play at the Staples Center. Whether this could be management, playing with Kobe Bryant, or other outside factors remains to be seen, but things have certainly been different since the days of Kobe and Shaquille O’Neal running the show.
So who could be the next head coach of the Lakers? Here are five options.
