Marvel Collector Corps April 2016 unboxing and review: Civil War arrives

facebooktwitterreddit

The two biggest stars of Captain America: Civil War are front and center in the April 2016 Marvel Collector Corps shipment.

As we’e noted before, some of the Marvel Collector Corps shipments match up with big movies so well that the themes become obvious. With Captain America: Civil War on the way on May 6, the April 2016 theme was pretty easy to guess ahead of time.

That doesn’t make it any less awesome. This box delivered more of the vinyl collectibles that most Collector Corps subscribers crave, and while the selection favors one of the two heroes leading the sides in the battle between Avengers, it might not be the one you’d suspect.

Intrigued? Let’s crack open the box and see what’s inside.

The Box and Accessories

Even though the interior of every Collector Corps box is always on point, this one is particularly cool. Instead of recreations of comic book panels, it’s a montage of all the heroes in Captain America: Civil War arrayed around the combined faces of Captain America and Iron Man.

Inside that first flap is the usual patch and pin that subscribers know is going to be in every shipment. Crossbones appears on the patch, and it’s his movie look that is the definite inspiration. The pin features Black Panther, who is making his MCU film debut in Civil War. Both are nice choices.

The Vinyl

Vinyl collectors are in a real treat in this box, with products from two of Funko’s most popular lines. The first is an exclusive two-pack of Pop Vinyl that shows no favoritism seeing as it’s Captain America and Iron Man together — or facing off, really. Even if you have the regular Cap and Iron Man figures from the Captain America: Civil War line, these will still be welcome additions to your collection since they are in different poses and actually look like they are about to throw down.

But wait, there’s more! This smiling guy is an exclusive unmasked Iron Man Dorbz (or is the singular just Dorb?), no doubt grinning because he’s rich and super smart. It’s great to see that even a war between heroes isn’t enough to make the Dorbz sour, and all jokes aside, getting one of these in a box that already has two Pops is great value.

The Shirt

This month’s shirt is also a winner. Continuing the Captain America: Civil War theme, it asks you to pick sides while depicting members of both teams in Pop Vinyl form, splitting the graphic right down the middle. If anything, it would be nice to get a shirt color other than black soon, as most of the tees in Collector Corps so far have been black. That’s a small gripe, but we collectors need some variety in our wardrobes too.

The Bonuses

In case you were wondering, yes, there’s a comic in this box as well. In this case, it’s Black Panther #1 with an exclusive variant cover that depicts a Pop-style Civil War showdown. Last but not least, there’s a lanyard that shows off alternating Captain America and Iron Man graphics.

One final welcome addition is a card that not only reveals the June theme — Women of Power — but also gives you tidbits about the different items. Among the things we learn are that the box was originally going to have a Sam Wilson Captain America Pop plus a new line, but the two-pack was included when plans changed. Also, the lanyard is perfect for holding your Marvel Collector Corps pins, which is a great idea.

The Verdict

The February Collector Corps box had no Pop Vinyl figures in it, but it’s quite possible that not that many people cared since it was all about Deadpool. The Captain America: Civil War shipment gets back on track with the two-pack and the Dorbz figure, as well as more extras than just about any previous box. It’s hard to beat that from a value standpoint, and my review box came with no problems in terms of quality control. It’s a winner, pure and simple, and one that is guaranteed to have you even more excited for May 6.
