The New York Islanders are headed to the second round after beating the Florida Panthers in six games.

The New York Islanders snapped a 23-year streak of no playoff series wins with a thrilling victory in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference first round over the Florida Panthers. Now, the challenge is only going to get greater as New York tries to go on a deep playoff run.

New York will move on to face the Tampa Bay Lightning in Round 2, with the schedule yet to be announced. Tampa Bay took down the Detroit Red Wings in its first round playoff series.

While the Islanders were able to close out the Panthers in Game 6 on Sunday night, it was far from easy. Both Game 5 and Game 6 went to double overtime, the first time that has happened in consecutive playoff games in a series since 2003.

Florida outplayed New York much of the time the series was at even strength. However, the heroics of two players ensured New York snapped its long playoff drought.

Center John Tavares scored with 53 second left in regulation before adding the game-winner later on. Overall, Tavares finished with five goals and four assists to provide the offense for the Islanders.

Everyone knew Tavares’ ability coming in, but the real surprise of the series was the performance of backup goaltender Thomas Greiss. Greiss played very well all series long in place of the injured Jaroslav Halak, including piling up 41 saves in the clincher.

If the Islanders are to beat the Lightning, they will need to slow down Tampa Bay’s top line. Nikita Kucherov scored five goals in Round 1 to lead the team.
