Sean McDonough could be the replacement for Mike Tirico on the Monday Night Football broadcasts.

On Monday, Sports Business Daily reported that ESPN announcer Mike Tirico would be leaving the company after 25 years. He has been part of the network’s golf, NBA and most notably, the play-by-play announcer for Monday Night Football.

The lead role for MNF is a big deal, so whoever replaces him will be taking on a national spotlight every Monday for the game that millions are watching. The person would also work with Jon Gruden, who was recently paid by ESPN to remain despite interest from NFL teams to hire him as a head coach.

Well, in the same report from Sports Business daily, another longtime ESPN announcer in Sean McDonough is being rumored as the top candidate to replace Tirico in the MNF booth. McDonough recently received a new deal from ESPN. No choice on the replacement has been made official, though.

McDonough came to ESPN in 2000 and has contributed on a variety of sports coverage, including college basketball, college football, and tennis coverage. He is one of those jack-of-all-trades announcers, similar to Tirico. Whether that means he would take on Tirico’s golf and NBA duties as well remains to be seen.

Whoever becomes the new MNF play-by-play announcer remains to be seen. It will probably be a notable name, though, like Sean McDonough, or ESPN could look elsewhere for a candidate.
