Cowboys owner Jerry Jones incorrectly believes that FSU star cornerback Jalen Ramsey was suspended for a game, and thinks that’s a good thing.
Leave it to the guy who signed Greg Hardy and looked the other way when graphic photos of Hardy’s domestic abuse victim were made public to now go on record praising Jalen Ramsey for receiving a one-game suspension for being “too aggressive” at his own college practice.
Never mind the fact that no suspension ever occurred, or that Ramsey started in every regular season game at Florida State. Yes, he did find himself in some hot water with the coaching staff after once disobeying practice rules and laying out a blocking back with a vicious hit that endangered both the player and prized quarterback Jameis Winston.
After the play, FSU head coach Jimbo Fisher was understandably furious, and he even went so far as to threaten kicking Ramsey off the team altogether. But the shutdown corner presumably apologized for his reckless actions and didn’t let it happen again, as he remained a key contributor on the Seminoles team for all three years he attended college.
Now that Ramsey is headed to the pros as a potential top-five and surefire first-round draft pick, many teams will be licking their chops at the idea of adding him to their secondaries. It’s not unusual for an NFL executive to admire a young player’s competitive spirit or fiery temperament on the field, but it’s a little strange to hear one of the most prominent figures in the league cite an incident where a player displayed his ‘mettle’ by defying his head coach and threatening the safety of his own teammates as a selling point for said player’s character and value.
Of course, if anyone’s going to do exactly that, it’s going to be Jerry Jones, so this news shouldn’t come across entirely as a surprise. The only real mystery is whether Jones and the Dallas Cowboys like Ramsey enough to take him at No. 4.
