The Dallas Cowboys have a great pick at No. 4 during Thursday’s NFL Draft, but may have made up their minds and could take Florida State’s Jalen Ramsey.
The Dallas Cowboys didn’t expect to have the No. 4 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft entering the 2015 NFL season. Starting quarterback Tony Romo broke his collarbone twice, so now Dallas has a terrific opportunity to select a blue-chip prospect with their top-five pick.
While many mock drafts have the Cowboys going with Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott at No. 4, the love that the Cowboys organization has for Florida State cornerback Jalen Ramsey is apparently very real.
According to NFLDraftScout.com Senior Analyst Dane Brugler, Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett had the following to say about Ramsey,”He’s an impact guy and covers man-to-man, he covers zone. He can rush. He is just one of those guys who jumps off that tape at you…”
Once Romo went down in Week 2, it became clear that Dallas had many holes on both sides of the football. While they already have Morris Claiborne and Brandon Carr at cornerback, both will become unrestricted free agents next spring and Dallas may take what many believe in the best talent in the draft at any position should Ramsey fall to No. 4.
Ramsey has high upside and draws comparisons to Pro Football Hall of Famer Deion Sanders and Arizona Cardinals secondary star Tyrann Mathieu. Ramsey could conceivably play all six defensive back positions as a rookie when Dallas goes into a dime coverage package.
If Garrett has his say in who Dallas takes at No. 4, expect Ramsey to be the next brightest star in Dallas for the Cowboys. While both the Los Angeles Rams and the Philadelphia Eagles will go quarterback at No. 1 and No. 2, if the San Diego Chargers go with someone like Oregon Ducks defensive lineman DeForest Buckner at No. 3, then Garrett could land the best defensive back prospect in the 2016 at No. 4 by taking Ramsey out of Florida State.
