1. Dan McGwire

As noted with the selection of Rick Mirer, the Seattle Seahawks made the biggest draft bust of their franchise’s history in 1991, when they selected Dan McGwire out of San Diego State with the No. 16 overall pick.. This was a pick that had disaster written from the moment he was selected by Ken Behring.

Head coach Chuck Knox was adamantly against McGwire and was in favor of the Seahawks taking Brett Favre instead. However, Behring was determined to take McGwire, which angered Knox to the point of not showing up for the post-Draft interview after the selection of McGwire.

In his four seasons as a member of the Seahawks, McGwire was one of the worst starting quarterbacks in the league. He only got five starts in his fours seasons with Seattle and his poor play only reaffirmed what Knox believed when the Seahawks drafted him.

He only threw two touchdowns over his entire career and he is a symbol of how difficult it really is to land a franchise quarterback. McGwire would lead to Mirer and that would only yield one year of some success.

If anything, this pick was a great reminder why it’s important for a coach and general manager to be on the same page.
