2. Lawrence Phillips

Lawrence Phillips is one of the saddest stories of any professional athlete ever. During his time as a running back for the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Phillips was an animal of a running back that couldn’t be brought down and the St. Louis Rams thought they were getting a workhorse that they could depend on for years.

They also decided to trade Jerome Bettis who was on the roster at the time, because they drafted Phillips. Bettis would go onto a legendary career, while Phillips would go onto nothing close.

Instead, they got a running back that couldn’t stay out of trouble or listen to his coaches. After Phillips got mad and left the Rams’ facility one day, the team decided to release him, because they had enough of dealing with him, as he had become a major liability and headache.

Phillips would bounce around with many teams and would be released from each one for his ability to listen to authority and stay out of trouble. He would eventually find his way to prison, where he would be charged with murdering his cellmate.

He would take his own life in an even further sad ending to someone with a ton of talent.
