The cause of death for WWE Women’s legend Chyna has been determined to be an accidental overdose, according to her manager
Joan Laurer, better known to WWE and wrestling fans as Chyna, passed away last week and really rocked the wrestling world. Though she’d battled numerous personal demons since her time in WWF/WWE, it was still jarring and tragic nonetheless to find out that such a legendary figure in the world of professional wrestling had passed away—especially under relatively mysterious circumstances, though no one suspected foul play. Though nothing’s been confirmed, Chyna’s manager, Anthony Anzaldo, believes he knows for certain what killed Laurer.
Speaking to the LA Times, Chyna’s manager said on Wednesday that the former Intercontinental and Women’s Champion in WWE died of an accidental overdose from a combination of Valium and Ambien, a tranquilizer and sleeping pill, respectively. Chyna was had prescriptions to both pills, but simply didn’t take them properly as she was reportedly having major trouble sleeping prior to her death. However, Anzaldo maintains that this wasn’t suicide but rather a fatal accident.
As far as an official cause of death goes from the Los Angeles County Coroner, they said earlier this week that it could take up to a month to get the results of a toxicology test to get official word, though the death was reported as either an accidental overdose or a natural death by those who first arrived at the scene.
While friends, family, and fans await for the cause of death with Chyna, though, the other interesting part of the LA Times report and Anzaldo’s comments are that Chyna’s brain will be examined for CTE by Dr. Bennet Omalu of Concussion fame to see what effects her work in WWE had on her brains, assumedly. Given the still recent retirement of Daniel Bryan and past incidents throughout pro wrestling, the results of the tests on Chyna’s brain will be fascinating to see.
Even still, her fans still mourn the loss of a star, a true legend of the industry. Let’s hope that the 9th Wonder of the World is still resting in peace now.
