Borussia Dortmund have officially released a statement confirming that Mats Hummels has asked for a transfer to Bayern Munich.

Mats Hummels has been one of the staples in Borussia Dortmund’s squad since joining the club in 2008. The defender came up through the youth ranks at Bayern Munich but became one of the best in the world after his move to Borussia Dortmund.

However, it was revealed by Borussia Dortmund on Thursday that the 27-year-old German international has asked for a transfer to the club’s rival, Bayern Munich. Unfortunately for Dortmund fans, this is a tale they’ve seen multiple times before. In recent years, the club has seen the likes of Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski depart to the Bavarian giants.

Hummels did feature for Bayern Munich in one league match back during the 2007-2008 season, but was hardly a hot commodity at the time. It was under the tutelage of Jurgen Klopp at Borussia Dortmund that the defender really made a name for himself.

The loss would be a significant one for Dortmund, as Hummels is in the prime of his career and one of the most sought after defenders on the planet. Despite being just 27, he already has a plethora of experience and has won some of the world’s most prestigious prizes, including the 2014 World Cup.

Borussia Dortmund currently sit seven points behind Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga table, with three matches to be played. They will be in action next on Saturday, when they host Wolfsburg at 9:30 a.m. ET.
