NFL Draft 2016: Cowboys tried to trade up for Paxton Lynch

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones told reporters the team made an effort to get back into the first round to draft quarterback Paxton Lynch.

With the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft nearing an end, the Denver Broncos made a major move to address their quarterback situation by trading up with the Seattle Seahawks for the 26th overall pick. Denver would use that pick on Paxton Lynch, the 6’7″ signal caller from Memphis who was sought after by several teams.

One of those teams that apparently were in the Lynch sweepstakes was the Dallas Cowboys. Team owner Jerry Jones revealed that the Cowboys did indeed make an effort to get back into the first round for a chance at taking the tall quarterback:

"“We were working real hard to get up there for the quarterback – Paxton Lynch. Frankly, give Denver credit,” Jones said. “I thought we had it done. It was that close.”"

Currently, Tony Romo is still the starter for the Cowboys, but is coming off a 2015 season where he suffered two injuries to his left shoulder and played in just four games during the year. Sitting behind Romo is Kellen Moore, who threw for 799 yards to go along with four touchdowns and six interceptions in three games last season.

The Broncos had been seeking a quarterback to replace the recently retired Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler, who signed a free agent deal with the Houston Texans in March. Denver signed Mark Sanchez in free agency and had been in conversations for Colin Kaepernick, Robert Griffin III and others before drafting Lynch.
