NBA Rumors: Sacramento Kings to interview David Blatt
By John Buhler
Former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach David Blatt will reportedly interview with the Sacramento Kings for their head coaching vacancy on Monday.
According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, the Sacramento Kings will interview former Cleveland Cavaliers head coach David Blatt for their vacancy at head coach on Monday.
Blatt was unceremoniously ousted from his post with the Cavaliers 41 games into the 2015-16 NBA season. In his brief time with the Cavaliers, Blatt went 83-40 in 123 regular season games and lead the 2014-15 Cavaliers to the NBA Finals in his first year as head coach.
Sacramento continues to run through head coaches at an unbelievable rate. The Kings fired long-time NBA head coach George Karl the day after the regular season ended on April 14th. Sacramento is about to hire its sixth head coach since drafting two-time All-Star center DeMarcus Cousins back in the 2010 NBA Draft.
Blatt is more than qualified to be the next head coach of the Kings and would certainly do as good of a job as anyone to try to bring a winning culture to the NBA’s perennial doormat from Northern California.
Now that the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Brooklyn Nets, the Washington Wizards, and the Los Angeles Lakers have filled their head coaching vacancies, Blatt might be one of the best coaching options that dysfunctional Sacramento could land.
While often-disgruntled Cousins would probably prefer to play for former Houston Rockets head coach and Boston Celtics legendary big man Kevin McHale, maybe Kings general manager will hire the best coach for the job in Blatt, regardless of any potential friction between head coach and malcontent superstar.
Divac has put out feelers for what he could land if he were to trade Cousins this offseason. Cousins has two more years left on his current Kings contract and could walk away for good in summer 2018. While Cousins’ talent is obvious, the best way to get the Kings out of their quagmire is to hire the absolute best coach for their team. Blatt has won everywhere he’s coached and would be a great fit for the Kings should they choose to bring aboard after Monday’s interview.
