According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United are willing to spend close to €90 million to bring Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain to Old Trafford this summer.

Manchester United have had a difficult season to say the least, as they struggle to qualify for a spot in next year’s UEFA Champions League. With Leicester City continuing to make history, Manchester United are simply trying to remain relevant.

With just 42 goals scored on the season so far, only one team in the Premier League’s top 10 have found the back of the net less. It is for this reason that a plethora of reports and rumors have begun to circulate from across the pond, that the Red Devils are already in pursuit of a world class striker for next season.

According to English outlet the Daily Mail, Louis Van Gaal had personally gone to Italy to watch Napoli’s Gonzalo Higuain in action. The newspaper reports that Van Gaal was in attendance on Monday for the crucial Serie A encounter that saw Roma defeat Napoli 1-0 at the Stadio Olimpico.

Higuain is currently in his third season with the Southern Italians, and has a remarkable 30 goals with three games still to be played. Juventus’ Paulo Dybala has the second most goals scored in the league, but is 14 shy of Napoli’s Argentine sensation.

Despite Higuain having a massive buyout clause in his contract that is reported to be somewhere in the neighborhood of €94 million, Manchester United believe they could pry away the 28-year-old with an offer just short of €90 million.

Higuain will be in action next on Monday, when Napoli host Atalanta at the San Paolo in league competition. The match kicks off at 3 p.m. ET.
