Chelsea just clinched the title for Leicester City in dramatic fashion.
Leicester City’s Premier League coronation could not have come in a more dramatic fashion. In a London Derby that had plenty of intense moments, Tottenham saw a two-goal lead slip and Leicester crowned Premier League champions. And in the end, the Foxes have the former Premier League champions to thank for it.
The broadcast team seemed to keep bringing up the fact that Stamford Bridge was a place where the Spurs have never won, and if they were to be considered serious title contenders, then they had to break that curse. It seemed like it would be their day, as Harry Kane opened the scoring. He’s been vital to Tottenham’s title challenge, and he came up big again today:
After that, Heung-Min Son
to give his team a two-goal advantage:
That’s when things got weird, as Danny Rose and Willian got into a fight and players from both teams joined in. Moussa Dembele even
at one point.
Needless to say, this signaled a change in momentum. Stuff like this is usually common in derbies, but once emotions got the better of Tottenham, there was no looking back.
The second half was all Chelsea, as Gary Cahill
opened the scoring for his side
off of a corner.
Chelsea continued to press after that, but Tottenham kept holding them back. It seemed like they would be able to see this result out and keep their title hopes alive … but super-sub
had other plans. Scoring just his third Premier League goal of the season, it ended up gifting Leicester City the title.
Just last season, Hazard was the one who clinched the title for Chelsea when he scored against Crystal Palace. However, this goal to gift Leicester City, the team that had 5000-to-1 odds to win entering the season, the title was far more dramatic.
Leicester City fans, and everyone in England, will be rejoicing over this title win. Although Tottenham fans will be salty for a bit, they’ll recover and acknowledge how great of a story this was. But Ranieri and company have Chelsea to thank for winning them the title when they couldn’t do it themselves at Old Trafford. We can’t wait for the scenes at the King Power Stadium next week when the team will lift the crown in front of their home fans.
