NHL Playoffs: Capitals vs. Penguins Game 4, full highlights, final score and more
The Pittsburgh Penguins beat the Washington Capitals 3-2 in overtime in Game 4 to take a 3-1 series lead.
The Capitals were not able to build off of a strong performance in Game 3 to win Game 4 at the Consol Energy Center, as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat them 3-2. With that 3-2 win, the Pens now lead the Caps in their seven game series three games to one. Pittsburgh played well despite not having their top two defensemen Kris Letang (due to a suspension) and Olli Maatta (due to injury).
Game 4 was all about the goaltenders. Both Braden Holtby of the Capitals and Matthew Murray of the Penguins played extremely well. Each goalie made highlight reel saves, but at the end of the evening, Murray was able to allow less pucks into his net than Holtby. The series will now head back to Washington for a critical Game 5 at the Verizon Center. Pittsburgh will be getting Letang back for Game 5.
Washington got goals from Jay Beagle (his third of the playoffs) and John Carlson (his fourth of the playoffs). Justin Williams got an assist on Carlson’s goal while Tom Wilson and Taylor Chorney got assists on Beagle’s goal. Pittsburgh got goals from Trevor Daley (assisted by Patric Hornqvist and Sidney Crosby), Matt Cullen (assisted by Tom Kuhnhackl and Brian Dumoulin), and Patric Hornqvist.
Three stars
Hornqvist had the overtime winner and also had the primary assist for Daley’s goal in the first period. Once again, he has come through in the clutch for the Penguins. It’s something that he has developed a penchant for doing.
Murray saved 34 of the 36 shots on goal that he faced against the Capitals. The Caps didn’t make it easy for him, but Murray yet again carried the Pens to victory. Could he be a Conn Smythe candidate?
Holtby saved 30 of the 33 shots that he faced against the Penguins.
