A look at the prize money breakdown and payouts for the 2016 Kentucky Oaks
Whenever you talk about the events at Churchill Downs on one of the first weekends in May, most people are talking about the Kentucky Derby. However, one of the best races in the world of horse racing actually happens annually on the Friday before Derby Day. The Kentucky Oaks has consistently been one of the most entertaining events in the sport and the 2016 Kentucky Oaks proved to not be any different.
The favorites going into the running of the 142nd Kentucky Oaks were led by Rachel’s Valentina, who was a 2-1 favorite right up until minutes before the start of the race. However, fillies like Land Over Sea, Weep No More, Lewis Bay, and even Go Maggie Go weren’t far behind them in terms of odds.
Of course, one of the things that does set apart the Kentucky Oaks from the Kentucky Derby is the fact that the purse is a bit smaller. Even still, trainers, owners, and jockeys alike are more than happy to finish in the prize money and get a piece of the $1 million purse at the Kentucky Oaks.
With Cathryn Sophia ultimately coming through in the 2016 Kentucky Oaks after charging late in regards to the odds, here’s a look at the way the prize money breakdown for the race:
