Although it was a finalist for the second ever class, the video game franchise Madden failed to make the 2016 World Video Game Hall of Fame class.

On May 5th, it was announced which video games would be inducted into the 2016 World Video Game Hall of Fame class. Although it was a finalist this year, Madden failed to earn enshrinement in the second-ever video game hall of fame class.

The six inductees in the 2016 hall of fame class were as follows: Grand Theft Auto III, The Legend of Zelda, The Oregon Trail, The Sims, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Space Invaders. The announcement of the six inductees came on May 5th at the Strong Museum in Rochester, New York.

To be fair, all six inductees are certainly deserving. Those are all iconic games/franchises that any gamer wouldn’t gripe about. However, Madden was transformative and is the most beloved and successful sports video game franchise in history.

Madden helped turn the NFL into the nation’s most popular sports league. From the late 1980s games on Sega and Nintendo to the modern-day consoles of the PS4 and XBox One, Madden is a must-have game for even the most casual of football fans to have in the collection.

The game incorporated the genius-like ramblings of Hall of Fame football coach turned NFL broadcaster John Madden into household lexicon. His last name is synonymous with generations of gamers and football fans. Some youngsters now may not even know that Madden was a person, they just know the name of game the game they play religiously starting every summer when the newest version comes out.

While the Video Game Hall of Fame is still in its infancy in Rochester, it’s hard to not have the most impactful sports video game franchise not enshrined in this newest class. It better make the cut in the 2017 Hall of Fame class.
