Bayern Munich wins 4th straight Bundesliga title
By Brandon Ogle
German powerhouse Bayern Munich capped off their fourth straight league title with a 2-1 win over FC Ingolstadt.
Winning a title in a league like the Bundesliga is not an easy task, even though Bayern Munich has displayed brilliance and dominance on the pitch year in and yea -out. Behind a brace from striker Robert Lewandowski, Bayern defeated FC Ingolstadt 2-1 on Saturday. This marked the team’s fourth straight Bundesliga title and tenth title since the 2000-01 season, per CBS Sports.
Unfortunately, when you are as strong of a team as Bayern is, you start getting judged more and more on your performance in larger competitions than just league efforts. The primary tournament I’m referring to is the UEFA Champions League. On the Tuesday leading up to this match with Ingolstadt, Bayern was eliminated by Atletico Madrid.
This continued a string of dominance held by some of the Spanish powerhouses over the last few years in the Champions League. Teams like Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid and Barcelona have proven to be too tough to beat even for some of the elites from Germany, England and other top European leagues.
This struggle to bring home a Champions League title goes hand-in-hand with the departure of Bayern coach Pep Guardiola. Under the three-year reign of the Spaniard Guardiola, Bayern never even made it to a Champions League final. However, can we effectively evaluate his entire tenure on this one competition? After all, he did cement Bayern as the class of Germany and a team that was arguably unbeatable in league play. In the end, I’m sure Bayern will continue to dominate the Bundesliga in the upcoming years and are likely only a piece or two away from bringing a Champions League title back to Germany.
